POWER NOT PITY

A podcast for disabled people of color everywhere

Welcome to POWER NOT PITY, a podcast that centers and celebrates the lived experiences of disabled people of color.

This time around, the show will spend time exploring the worlds of people in our community who dare to interrogate the dominant narrative of what survival feels like for a disabled person of color during these trying times. They all demonstrate what it means to thrive fully and authentically.

Let's dismantle ableism by listening to each other's stories.

TRANSCRIPT OF MINI EPISODE #1
"EMBODYING CHANGE"
FEAT. BRI M.

BRI's Opening Commentary:

(starry music begins the episode)

Welcome to POWER NOT PITY, a podcast that amplifies, celebrates and delights in the lives of disabled people of color. This is all about passing the mic to us, because... we deserve to make our voices known! I specifically center the experiences of black disabled people-- but it’s all love here! It’s all love… and I feel the love from so many people in the community, I have to thank all of you immensely. I also want to thank the newest patrons to my patreon: Jeff, Vee, and talib jasir fleming. If you, dear listener, would like to get  to know the show better-- including a shoutout and early access to clips, check out my patreon!

SO… Season three is on its way in the summer but in the interim, I would also like to offer these 3 minisodes for you to enjoy.

The idea behind these smaller episodes came to me in a dream. I was talking to a guest on the show and suddenly my guest asked me the question I ask all my guests: “What’s your disabled power?” it was then that i realized i have never really shared my own disabled power in detail on the show because i used to believe the show has never been solely about me. Well, these mini-episodes  are a space to get to know me better. I’m so excited to share my personal journey with you, it is my honor to take you with me.

Without further ado, here’s the first episode.

(The podcast theme chant comes in) Power power power not pity pity pity power power power not pity pity pity.

(The sound of the ocean lets you know where you are.)

I am sitting at the ocean and reflecting on what it means to me to be disabled today-here and now. the beach has always been one of the hardest places for me to be physically disabled… it’s hard for me to get through the sand because of balance issues and it’s hard to regulate my heat sensitivity. my partner is going the extra mile to make me feel comfortable, but it’s still easy to get discouraged.

But we put that blanket down. We set up the umbrella, grab my dorky cooling vest and bust out the cold beverages. And then… everything melts away.

(there is a longer pause here and ocean sounds take over the episode)

I find myself entranced by the movement of the waves and the never ending expanse that is before me. I am in awe every time.

(there is a longer pause here and ocean sounds take over the episode)

As I get older in my MS, I am finding more and more that it has to do with accepting change. nowadays i choose to move like the ocean is my guide.

(ocean sounds make up the background soundtrack of the episode)

I move closer and closer to understanding and the foam in my mind breaks into a newer level of consciousness.

I pull back sometimes because we all have setbacks don’t we? But changes in my condition teach me that it’s always better to give myself permission to move on.

So I move around the obstacles in my way, wearing down the rocks of internalized ableism. When the waves crash again into these rocks, the foam in my mind spreads throughout my body and my mind. I become overtaken again by awe, in awe of how far i’ve come.
(there is a pause here and ocean sounds take over the episode)

So what’s my disabled power? For these next three episodes, I want to share more about what powerful embodiment has gifted me over the past 7 years with MS. This episode is named embodying change for a reason, I believe that that quality is one of my disabled powers. Accepting and embodying that change has shown me more than I ever thought possible and like the ocean, I have become ever present to the ebb and flow of it all.

(ocean sounds take over and signals the end of the episode)

BRI's Closing Commentary:

(starry music comes back in)

I hope you enjoyed this one family. it was really special to take you with me to the beach. Where will we go next? I don’t know… look out for the next one! Thanks so much for listening!
